I’m addicted ro 25 year old Macallan and .45 ammo.

Where mine at?

And you feel giving them Crack pipes will?

I feel like this is the difference between ignorance vs. trauma. I used to be judgemental of addicts because I thought they were one of those people in middle school who got with some friends, and was like, “Hey this is cool!” and ultimately got addicted. Since then I have learned many turned to drugs to cope and escape what has happened to them. As a numbing agent and to function in everyday stressors (I.e. school, work, relationships, etc)

A lot of kids are acting on hormones and do not know yet how to curb their desires. They don’t know the consequences thanks to a lack of sex ed. I would bet some would use sex to escape, like drugs, but that goes into a different issue.

Drugs, we have drug education programs for those. There was one called “Hugs not Drugs” in elementary school. It was a modular program and they would have speakers come in and discuss the dangers of drugs. We got more in-depth in 7th grade where we learned about the specific drugs that are out there, their effects, and their consequences. In 7th grade, we watched videos on each of the drugs and they showed the negative consequences that using has- I vividly remember one on smoking/snuffing/tobacco and they showed what was called “cauliflower tongue.” There are now organizations that speak against drug use, such as truth. There are all kinds of education resources out there that schools will incorporate into their curriculum.

Yet with all of this, I know a number of classmates who smoked (and still do), and used heroin. They got the education, but why did they turn to drugs?

They had something happen and needed some way to cope with it. They were desperate.

In the US, AIDS is predominantly transmitted by homosexual males.

I have mixed feelings on this.

giving out free needles drastically reduced disease.

these program are often used as a way to slowly build trust with drug addict to help them enter recovery.

It does.

But I’m still mixed about it.

It’s one thing to end the war on drugs (which I fully support, it was a stupid idea in the first place) but my views on true “addicts” are not pretty.

So this is one of those situations where my logical mind (which sees the benefits of these programs in reducing the spread of blood and respiratory disease) has to overcome my principled stances on certain types of addicts.

I don’t like the idea of facilitating a meth head to smoke or inject more meth. I don’t like the idea of my tax money going to that, when there are millions of truly poor hardworking Americans who need that money.

But I also understand, when I take my emotions out of it, that these programs can help slow the spread of certain diseases.

So I’m somewhere in the middle on this subject.

I would agree in that drugs shouldn’t be criminal in and of themselves, but because they serve as a gateway to crime (through impairing judgement) they should still be illegal.

However, if someone gets arrested just for possession (not distribution or any higher level offenses) then a court-ordered detox and rehab would be more appropriate than dumping them into a jail. Jail should be for violent offenders, those who hurt other people and need to be kept away for the safety of everyone else.

ETA: I would include distribution too. But nothing else. If anything else, jail would be appropriate, and then a rehab program.

like I said these program are also a way for outreach to build trust with the local addict with the end goal of getting them into rehab.

the goal of outreach is also to help people get clean, sometimes you need to lure them in

War on drugs wasn’t just throwing people in prison. It went and still goes well beyond that.

That is perfectly reasonable.

Ok but predominantly doesn’t mean all.

Hep C, Hep B, etc etc etc.

I love it when before I come on this site for the day I have a fairly good idea which outrage subjects will be at the top of the page.

Right down to the distorted context guaranteed to make RWer howling with rage.

Watch the shows and troll through social media first…visit here second. It is an awesome predictor.

Copying headlines and “tweets.” Just the way our outrage goes

A few years ago, disparate sentences for Crack v Cocaine were racist.

Now we are giving away crack pipes to achieve equity.

Progress!
