That would be exactly what you’re doing. I’ve struggled mightily in my life and when I see someone worse off than myself that exhibits the least bit of gumption to do anything for themselves I’ll frequently empty my pockets out to them, give them a weeks worth of food, and maybe even a chance to earn some pocket money while I evaluate them for more as long as I have it to give.

Most of the conservatives I’ve ever known will do the same.

Perhaps. But I would say the legacy of Jim Crow still has some lasting effects.

The first immigration law wasn’t even passed until 1819, the first limiting immigration not until 1882, and other than the limits on Chinese immigration under that act there were no “illegal immigrants” until the passage of the first such law in 1888, other than those specifically addressing illegal imported temporary laborers.
