Can Mass Shootings Be Stopped?

From a study from the Rockefeller Institute, “Can Mass Shootings Be Stopped”

Exacerbating this already complex issue is the prevalence of social media and never-
ending wall-to-wall media coverage. Mass shootings, and those that are particularly
lethal, are amplified by the news cycle, making them appear more commonplace when
they are, in fact, statistically rare. Despite their episodic and highly sensational nature,
however, not all mass shootings garner the same attention by the media.1
Those shootings that are the most lethal may receive more coverage, while those events that
are perceived as more “routine” by the media may not even be covered at all.

It also claims:

Further compounding the issue is that
the new laws that are passed, or even those that have been on the books for decades,
often are not enforced, leading them to be ineffective at preventing the next mass
shooting.5

IMHO…the number one reason for mass shootings is an internal anger with in the shooter that feels deprived of a positive relationship with his father. Since personal responsibility will never be legislated and enforced, I see this problem getting worse.

But, as Connell has found, school shootings are extremely rare. Although the fear of mass school shootings often drives policy, she said, those efforts aren’t always the most productive.

One is that, as of now, we don’t think there is an increase in the number of incidents as much as there is an increase in the attention to the incidents.

Anything before Columbine, there’s a real reporting bias that we may not ever be able to truly overcome. So I really caution people when they say that school shootings have increased, because I don’t think that’s going to be our finding. Certainly, attention has increased.

Let’s look at “shootings” over all and you’ll find the same common denominator…an angered, young male with either no or a broken relationship with their father.

Ummm ok?

A gang member is substituting the needed male relationship that they didn’t find at home.

Years ago, I thought about this a lot. There is a fundamental difference between males and females in how they act, think and respond to different life situations. Neither is better and neither is worse but they are distinctly different. When youth does not receive both perspectives as they mature, the chance for an imbalance in their cognitive thinking increases. A child needs both their mother and their father to nurture them from their childhood into maturity. Our culture has developed into a society that no longer recognizes this truth and placed little value on the importance of each component. There is a reason that “God hates divorce”.

From the Rockefeller study

A Roadmap for Policymakers
Knee-jerk reactions rooted in emotion will not solve the problem. The evidence produced
to date shows that the problem requires solutions that are versatile and grounded in
evidence in order to be effective. Although mass shootings occur considerably less
frequently than portrayed by the media, the findings are that they have increased over
time. While some of our most populous states have experienced a majority of the mass
shootings over time, there are states that have never had one. Schools and workplaces
are more likely to be the site of a mass shooting and policy efforts should focus more
intensely in those areas. **Further, although common public perceptions of mass shootings **
**> include use of assault rifles, more than three-quarters of mass shootings actually involve **
> handguns. Therefore, it is incumbent to find evidence-based solutions to this growing
problem. Given the regional, demographic, and type of gun used data, a one-size-fits-all
approach may not work — tailored solutions may work better depending on the state and
the community. Future works by the consortium will explore these issues.

So Centgov can’t solve it and “assault rifles” aren’t the problem. Emotional knee-jerking (ala PA Hogg) is counter-productive.
Interesting.

Quick question, but I’m trying to remember did someone post on the old board that while most mass shootings are via handgun, the shootings have become more deadly with assault weapons?

Yes.

“More deadly” is in the incorrect term. The claim is also not true in all cases, which means there are other factors present.

Opinion: The hoplophobes see the AR platform as an easy first step in incremental disarming of the 2nd Amendment. “No one needs an AR to hunt deer.” Said by an ex-Texas Ranger Captain just a couple of days ago and many others. If they can get those banned, “You agreed to ban ARs, so we can ban others.” It’s a standard incrementalist argument and pouring water on the slippery slope. Not new.

And the media is hyping it.

Now I have a question for you:

Was Parkland “worse” than Santa Fe and why or why not?

How are you judging “more deadly”?

Fair question for discussion by the way.

Here’s another for you:

If the goal is to prevent school shootings, why is the focus on ARs given what you now see?

Japan has a crazy amount of technology (like us). Crazy amount of social media (like us). News. Movies. Video Games. Single Males. Schools. Elections. Crazy TV, Strip Clubs and tons of people crammed into some cities.

Where are their mass shootings? Where is Israel’s? South Korea’s? Australia’s?

Hell, Japan has ~ 10 gun deaths A YEAR. We’ll have that many BEFORE LUNCH TODAY.

Another poor effort. Japan is a homogenous society with a completely different culture. They live in a totalitarian society. It works for them.

Are you Japanese? Are you not capable of moving there? Have you ever been to Japan?

Go away. Your posts read like those of a hysterical old woman peeking out her window and complaining on a CB radio from the 70s.

So there are “gun deaths” in Japan? How many “knife deaths”?

ROTFLMAO! That is absolutely amazing.

Are there any commonalities among mass shooters that we are not exploring as a society?

in case anyone comes into this thread and they really want to understand how other countries have done it, start here…
