Jaywalking was never a Criminal offense, so the thread title “decriminalizes…,” is absurd and misleading.

I’m sorry that upsets you, but there was no intention to mislead you. In fact that’s the word being used for this in the media on both the left and right side. The choice to use the work decriminalize is not partisan.

Just revisiting this comment because I just learned having looked at the actual bill, that this is basically built in:

“The bill would require the Commissioner of the California Highway Patrol, in consultation with the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, to submit a report to the Legislature on or before January 1, 2028, regarding statewide pedestrian-related traffic crash data and any associated impacts to traffic safety, including an evaluation of whether and how the changes made by this bill have impacted pedestrian safety.”
