Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh resigned from office Thursday following a series of FBI raids at her private residence and City Hall; ending days of speculation after her attorney claimed she was not “lucid” enough to plan her political future.
“Sorry for the harm that I have caused to the image of the city of Baltimore and to the credibility of the office of the mayor,” Pugh’s attorney read in a statement from her. “Baltimore deserves a mayor who can move our great city forward.”
“Now more than ever, Baltimore City needs strong and responsible leadership,” said GOP Governor Larry Hogan. “Mayor Pugh has lost the public trust. She is clearly not fit to lead. For the good of the city, Mayor Pugh must resign.”
The FBI launched the raid following an investigation into whether Pugh violated federal law by writing a children’s book then selling the material to companies with ties to the Baltimore government.
