The man arrested in New Mexico and charged with training children to conduct mass school shootings is the son of a Brooklyn-based Imam with suspected ties to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing in New York City.
According to CBS News, 39-year-old Siraj Wahhaj’s father -who shares the same name as his son- testified as a character witness for the “Blind Sheik” Omar Abdel Rahman who was convicted in 1995 for planning terrorist attacks across the United States.
“The elder Wahhaj heads Masjid At-Taqwa mosque in Brooklyn, New York, which has attracted radical speakers over the years,” writes CBS. “Authorities were searching the compound in search of the younger Siraj Wahhaj’s 4-year-old son, Abdul-ghani, who is severely disabled and disappeared from Georgia in December. He is accused of kidnapping the boy.”
Local police and federal authorities arrested at least five adults and rescued 11 children over the weekend after receiving an anonymous tip about the “filthy” training camp near the New Mexico-Colorado border.
Court documents confirm Wahhaj was training the children to murder other students in potential school shootings across the region.
