Reality isn’t their friend unless they are considering powering all of those electric grids by coal which they are not.

They are pushing their population for something that the technology isn’t there yet. I am the first to admit that batteries have came a long way it wasn’t long ago and electric car would go only 60 miles now they are going 300+ it wasn’t the government that innovated this it was private companies.

If they would stay out of it and let it happen the transition would come anyways. It’s just not there yet obviously if Germany had to fire up their coal plants and the EU had to spend close to a trillion on energy loss from the war.

Meh- what do you think self-driving cars are for? So that we can kick back and play mario brothers instead of hating a mindless commute.

Go to your job or the grocery store, but do something else while you’re getting there- just like riding a bus. Keep a car for traipsing out to the woods to hunt but let go of needing one for the day to day if you live in an urban area.

What do you suppose each self-driving car will cost compared to the dumb one you drive now?

That governmental interference shapes our lives?

Thats been true for a long time. They pick winners and losers with tax codes, incentives, legislation etc. We live in an ICE oil based reality in large part due to governmental interference. Our sense of “freedom” is based on systems and rules created by others.

In many ways, the EV and driverless cars represent an ability to plug into more options, more “freedom” instead of being beholden to one technology and fuel system.

And you love it, right? Your idea of freedom seems to be not having to make decisions or do things for yourself.

Self driving cars are a LONG way away.

They don’t do well with the variables of road conditions. Multiple experiments have shown that.

Instead what will become a standard feature (and pretty much already is a standard feature on premium and luxury cars) are driver assist aids. Lane center control, drowsiness metering, automatic braking, radar guided cruise control.

Funnily enough my 2018 Civic Si is the last year none of those features were available on the Si trim model. They became standard in 2019 model year “premium” Civics.

They are standard on Accords now. Even the base models have them.

I’d like to see them test a driverless car where I live … where you can’t see the lane lines (if there are any in the first place) or even the curb or shoulders for at least half of the year.

Yes … Sort of. (They did force the switch from incandescents.) It came along because it became affordable and because it was orders of magnitude less costly to operate. And so it would have done so without the government banning any incandescents. One can buy them now for less than they charged for those lousy CFLs.

When EVs are cheaper (without subsidy) and better than ICEs (including the ability to recharge them) they will dominate the market, assuming of course, that the materials to build them are available. That question looms larger every day.

My life has improved over the years regardless of which President was in office. It did from Bush to Obama, it did from Obama to Trump and has continued under Biden.

And the current financial situation which has racked the globe would have happened under Trump as well.
