Breaking: Biden pardons thousands of past convictions for simple marijuana possession

Good.
Yes it is obviously a pre-election stunt
but I’ll take it.

Dumbest prohibition ever.

Can we move on to a national legalization bill? Or at least decriminalization?

It is effectively decriminalized except for commercial quantities.

This is how you do an October surprise: give people something they want that is insanely popular.

It is, unfortunately, not.

I don’t know if thats true Gaius. This is from 2020 but I don’t think much has changed.

The data from the FBI’s report revealed that police arrested 545,602 people for cannabis related crimes in 2019. That arrest rate is 9% higher than the 495,871 people arrested for violent crimes the same year. And those being arrested for cannabis aren’t just those making money from selling, growing or manufacturing the drug - they are mostly just people who use cannabis. The vast majority of these arrests (92%) were for simple possession of the drug. 500,395 of those arrested for cannabis were simply found in possession of cannabis. Even if we take out all the arrests for being involved in unregulated cannabis commerce and just focus on arrests for cannabis possession, the numbers still outpace arrests for violent crimes.

Is it still the GOP in the senate holding up legalization? And if so…why?

More desperate than I thought.

This was literally a layup for the GOP to steal and put the Dems to shame. Oh well, I’ll take it! This also puts pressure on governors to pardon state offenders.

Decriminalizing is next…

Well in my town if try opening a store to sell shirts . . . without a license
or cut hair without a license,
or reshingle your house
or replace your windows
without a permit,
you get in more trouble for that, than you do if you are caught smoking a joint when they deliver the cease and desist order for roofing.

So yeah marijuana is effectively . . . as decriminalized as . . . roofing shingles. You live in NYC right? What happens to you there if you try to replace the windows in your house?

Has Biden admitted that it was a mistake to sponsor the 1993 crime bill? This move feels like admission, I’m wondering if he’s already spoken on that recently

He admitted as much on the campaign trail. Called it a “mistake”.

Pure evil was what that was.

But tons of politicians on both sides were for that back then. Even leading black leaders.

Huh

I was not aware that the 1994 crine bill increased the number of
non violent small time marijuana offenders in jail.

Where you live . . . How much marijuana do you need to possess before there is a jail sentence?

I believe the “three strike rule” was implemented in that crime bill. Which could make a simple possession charge a felony due to 2 other strikes.

That sounds plausible.

What’s the limit in your area? How much marijuana before you go to jail?

I think you © are just mad Dark Brandon beat the GOP to the punch.

Yep. And it proves the axiom … Even a blind squirrel occasionally finds an acorn.

Congress never does anything simple. Every good idea gets loaded down with so much crap that even the sponsors of the original Bill will vote against it.
