Blue Beetle Movie

I am a huge fan of the DCEU (more so than the MCU) and was looking forward to seeing Blue Beetle which I loved reading back in the 80s, and I was not disappointed.

Jaimie Reyes (played by Cobra Kai’s Xolo Mariduena who IMHO is a great actor and who I want to see more of in other roles) through a series of typically convenient events is merged with an alien tech called the Scarab which chooses Jamie to be its host and the new Blue Beetle. Hijinks with Jamie learning his new powers and the whole Reyes family ensues followed by the Jamie and his family taking on the villain of the movie in her island fortress.

Blue Beetle is a solid superhero origin story which while it does not take itself to seriously certainly has some poignant moments. I know some think DC went woke with making Blue Beetle a latino but Reyes has been in the comics since 2011 and is the third Blue Beetle. Not sure why some think a superhero has to be a white guy but hey ho.

While its a fun breezy movie there are some observations about corporate imperialism, gentrification, as well as the militarization of the police but the movie does not revolve around them. The focus of the movie is family and each member of the Reyes family are key components of the movie with their own part to play. They are as much Blue Beetle as Jaimie is.

Blue Beetle straddles the end of the DCEU and the start of James Gunns new DCU. Gunn said Blue Beetle will play a role in the new DCU and I hope that happens.

Overall a fun, interesting superhero movie which will hold your attention and is definitely worth seeing in the cinema. Though of course in a few months you will be able to catch it on Max.

My son wants to see this. He says it’s his favorite DC superhero. I’d never heard of him until recently. I like Xolo in Cobra Kai, although, I’m not sure all the actors on that show understand it’s satire.
