I guess I’ll just leave it here. My father used to say to my brother and I “You must like pain. Don’t come crying when you keep shooting each other with bb guns.” Yes, they think they can get away with it but that doesn’t change the fact that deep down, they must like jail. The first time I can see but like my step son… after about a half a dozen times, you just have to figure they like jail.

Nope. We will just have to agree to disagree since there are no facts on the subject only opinions.

Allan

I can accept that. The funny one was me telling my step son he didn’t need to go to prison for sex, there were other ways… he laughs now but back then it wasn’t too funny for him. He wanted to beat me up but common sense kept him from trying. Well, he tried once goofing off but he didn’t care for being wrapped up like a pretzel and getting taunted. I kept asking him if his Taekwondo teacher taught him how to get loose.

There is bias in the hiring process that shows up consistently across many studies.

“Just ‘cause” isn’t an answer.

On the second study, I found this amusing:

Compared to Whites, African Americans are twice as likely to be unemployed and earn nearly 25 percent less when they are employed.

Yeah, care to compare black vs white as an equal position, equal education, etc? You’ll see the same exact disparity between middle class and poor white people. Let me ask another question. If companies are willing to pay as LOW as they can possibly pay, why are they not firing all of the white guys and hiring black people? If the statement above is correct, you can get an equally qualified black guy and cut your expenses by 25%. Right? The left seems to be saying companies are so racist that they’re willing to take less profits, though companies are so greedy that they’ll do anything for a profit?

More fun facts. Neil was less likely to be called back than Hakim, Leroy and Jermaine. Emily was less likely to be called back than Latoya, Kenya, Latonya or Ebony. Brad was most likely to be called back, with Kristen. Rasheed and Aisha were the least likely to receive call backs. Jermaine was more likely to receive a call back than Neil, Geoffrey, Brett, Brendan, Greg, Todd and Matthew.

I don’t know, a lot of this stuff seems like it’s geared to get the results back that they want.

Missouri has a study that disputes the 2004 study you linked.

I’d love to read. How in the world have I exhausted my allotment of articles behind that paywall though?!?!

Never mind - found the paper!

Aha - there is one big difference and is certainly worth mentioning - this study used surnames and not first names.

The above-listed surnames are strong indicators of race. For example, based on data from the United States Census, 90 and 75 percent of individuals with Washington and Jefferson surnames are African American, respectively. Similarly, 90 percent of individuals with a surname of either Hernandez or Garcia are Hispanic, and 70 percent of Andersons and Thompsons are white. Unlike in Bertrand and Mullainathan (2004), we did not use distinctly African American-sounding first names because these names are associated with relatively low socioeconomic status among Americans (Fryer and Levitt, 2004), and we wanted to avoid confounding employers’ perceptions of race and socioeconomic status.

Interesting - thank you for sharing! The two hypotheses proposed by these researchers are that the “black” names in Greg/Emily are associated with low socioeconomic status and that “Washington” does scream “I’m black!” as loudly as “Malik”.

Because it was cleaned from the system and then some.

Interesting.

Expectations. If nobody expects anything, what do we deliver?

Culture and all that informs it.

You’re right, education is very important. But on average blacks have less income than whites. People with less income generally live in areas with cheaper housing. Cheaper housing means the less property taxes. Public schools are primarily funded by property taxes. So with less funding you get bad schooling. Blacks also have higher HS drop out rates and you can’t go to college without a HS diploma or GED. And if you do get in college, you have to be able to actually pay for it, which can be challenging for low income students.

Sorry, I don’t have time to get into this. You can read this if you actually care:

How do you know that?

77% of black babies are born out of wedlock. You can’t blame that on whites.

Because I read, study, ask questions, think.

I’ve been studying human behavior in systems for 8 years. Complexity theory for over a year.

Strange that your conclusion is contrary to most other sociologists that study this sort of stuff.

You have polling of “most sociologists”?

How many are there?

2, Ben and Jerry

In all seriousness, if you Google this stuff most links seem to point towards sites and studies that show it exists… and also its pretty damn logical when you think about it. Do I have an official poll of sociologists? No, but the two of the largest sociologist associations in the world say its real:
