No. That’s not a good solution. And no, they don’t have good reasons for making the software proprietary and dealership only, meaning you can’t even find out what the problem is without the dealership.

should I be allowed to repair my own clothing or does that violate the rights of patent owner?

Rental cars are UnAmerican? I am sure someone will sell them a tractor, just not one with cutting edge valuable IP on board. Wouldn’t surprise me if they had to implement this in the first place or whoever makes their AI wouldn’t sell to them. Unless they made it in house. This isn’t something every tractor maker does, just the best ones with the best software.
American should have the right to repair their personal property.
You do realize that this boils down to the same argument as the left claiming they can ban or restrict ammo and it’s not an infringement. Same principles apply.

Hertz doesn’t have to sell you their rental car. There is no constitutional right to a tractor.
we are not talking about rentals, we are talking about privately owned tractors.
No. But it is the same principle. You’re saying a company can sell you something for you to own outright, but they can lock it up so that it’s worthless until you go to them for help.

I know, and I am saying that is subject to change.

No, I am saying you can fix anything, that doesn’t give you access to valuable IP. Change all the flat tires you want. Or they can always transform their business model to rental/lease. Or try to, market might push back. Or, if none of that works and your IP is being ripped off, there is no incentive to fund more research.
if anyone steal their IP they can easily sue them.

Have to catch them first. How do you think that works in Chinese court? They are an international brand.
You’re behind the times. You can’t even scan the engine to know what the problem is without the dealer software. It could be a bad O2 sensor that’s easily replaced, but without the dealer software all you know is that the warning lights came on.
This isn’t a “we want access to the computer code so we can hack it” problem.
This is a “the computer won’t even tell us what the problem is unless it’s at the dealership.” Problem.

Whoa, this is awesome. I never expected right to repair to be pushed by the administration.
A farmer shouldn’t have to wait months to find out what is wrong with his ■■■■■■■ tractor.
The vast majority of tractors out here are over 60 years old, precisely because they’re repairable.

Fleecing of farmers. That’s all they are doing.
Good on Biden for this.

You expect caterpillar or John Deere to stop making tractor because of this? Stop lying to yourself.

I’m having difficult time understanding how this is anything but a win for consumers, especially when we’re on the cusp of the EV era with proprietary technology. It’s even possible that this could blow open the doors for a lucrative aftermarket mod industry for electric vehicles which currently doesn’t exist.

What happens if you fix it yourself now?
