Biden proposes banning Chinese vehicles, 'connected car' technology from US roads

“When foreign adversaries build software to make a vehicle that means it can be used for surveillance, can be remotely controlled, which threatens the privacy and safety of Americans on the road,” Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said. “In an extreme situation, a foreign adversary could shut down or take control of all their vehicles operating in the United States all at the same time causing crashes, blocking roads.”

“We anticipate at this point that any vehicle that is manufactured in China and sold in the U.S. would fall within the prohibitions,” said Liz Cannon, who heads the Commerce Department’s information and communications technology office.

She added the regulation would force General Motors and Ford Motor to stop selling vehicles imported from China in the U.S.

A pretty extreme escalation of anti-china policy. I can’t argue with the reasoning.

That puts an end to Chinese penetration in the US vehicle market. Almost all newer cars are connected enough to get swept up in the ban.

Who the heck is Biden?

We’re so behind in the trade war with China just saw where it costs $10 to make each iPhone in China how can anyone compete with that? It seems like free trade worked out well when it was like minded countries trading.

Free trade competing with slave trade just doesn’t work out so well. It’s fun buying all the cheap goods, to only turn around and see all your countries manufacturing has been gutted.

Uhm, not gonna lie I like my Chinese parts to a certain extent. They’re cheap as ■■■■ and generally work long enough not to be an issue.

Most of my Trans Am’s needed parts were Chinese in origin. They were surprisingly reliable and were cheap as hell.

Why don’t we form a broad alliance with other pacific manufacturing countries to lessen the influence of china on global markets?

Because that requires International Politik. And America doesn’t do International Politik very well anymore. If we can’t get what we want by throwing the US military at it, then we don’t have many other solutions.

I was being sarcastic.

We had the TPP…

Yeah Trump blew that one up. Not one of his smartest moments.

But it was ideologically consistent for him, which is a rare thing with Trump. The idea behind MAGA economic matters is that manufacturing should be returned the US. The TPP didn’t really do that; it moved manufacturing out of China and into more politically tasteful states like Vietnam and Laos. So for Trump, it had to die.

Which was really stupid because it was a really hard negotiated treaty and would have boxed the Chinese in. But then again, MAGA has never went to the school of Bismarckian Real Politik. So it’s not surprising.

Like some kind of Trans Pacific Partnership? Damn that would have been a good idea. Oh wait…some guy ended our involvement.

if the assembly lines in America that make new cars use parts that are imported from China, where does that leave us?

car parts are no longer exclusively manufactured in America, even for new American cars…

even Harley Davidson motorcycles use 20-30% foreign made parts

Ironically the most American car on the market by content and assembly is the Toyota Camry.
