Bald Eagles rebuild their nest after Hurricane Ian destroyed the old one

There is a well known Bald Eagle nest in Fort Myers that has had live camera coverage for years. It was completely destroyed during Hurricane Ian.

However, it looks like the two eagles have been very industrious and have built a fine new nest in just three weeks.

39 second excerpt from Camera 1 showing their carpentry.

The live stream of Camera 1, which right now is devoid of activity. However, it will not be long before the eggs are laid. There was an urgency behind this nest building to be sure.

I wish them well with this year’s brood.

They have gone through hurricanes quite a few times since I started watching them. They must know when to get out of town.

I used to watch them with binoculars before the camera and they were in a nearby undeveloped area. Some asshat purposely killed their tree by cutting out a strip of bark all the way around the trunk (“ringing” the tree). Everyone thought they would be gone when the tree finally fell, but they ended up in Dick Pritchard’s tree.

If a hurricane wasn’t enough, they have been harassed by Great Horned Owls the last several days. The owls are trying to run them off and take over the nest. I think Harriet and M15 will ultimately stand their ground.

This video shows Great Horned Owls successfully hijacking an Eagle nest last year.

It must really suck for the eagles though. At night, with no moonlight, the eagles have no way to know if an attack is coming or from where, since owls are completely silent.

Harriet has been knocked clean out of the nest before, but come back to prevail.
