1.79 here on election night when Biden “won”.
It had been as low as 1.59 a gallon off and on while Trump was in office.
It quickly doubled after Biden took office.
It only goes down from that at election times when Biden drains our strategic reserves for political purposes. 
That’s a given.
There was a reason gas prices went up.
It was a deal that Trump engineered with Russia and Saudi Arabia to stop their price war so global prices would rise to benefit domestic production.
The deal was finalized in April of 2020 when prices cratered because of the collapse of the economy but when things started to open up and prices started to rise again, global production was down and prices went up.
Exaggerated and over the top punishment is not justice, it’s oppression.
What would be a fair punishment in your opinion?

You do recall that in April of 2020, under Trump, oil prices were actually negative, right? (-$37 a barrel). Due to the global lack of demand due to COVID? Maybe that had somethng to do with gas prices.
And no, negative oil prices are not a good thing.
