“George Orwell’s books - especially Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm - are written against totalitarianism and also against Communism from the point of view of an ardent socialist.”

So he was against private property, but also against the government owning everything. He wanted the collective public to have everything. One can also imply from this definition that Orwell was somewhat of an Anarchist, Minarchist, or Libertarian, though which side is a mystery, because right-libertarianism (the stereotypical libertarianism) favors private property, while left-libertarianism is more like a proletariat-style of thinking. (I.e. Anarcho-Communism).

I suppose if one had to choose, he would be Libertarian-left, but he was clearly against Communism.
