Most people don’t realize that corporate taxation is one of the smaller parts of the federal income stream. Increases or decreases in that component just impact a minority segment of the revenue stream.

It’s pretty simple. Money in must equal money out. I don’t know how many more times we have to suffer through hardline supply-side economics experiments to understand tax cuts are not a magic bullet and can be quite harmful.

It’s what killed Brownback in Kansas too. He cut taxes (and resulted in reduced revenue) but did not cut spending. It crushed Kansas’ state budget.

I would support cuts in taxes if they were accompanied with a 2x cut in spending. (Even 1.5x. But we never see even a dollar-for-dollar match in spending cuts.)

We’ve been spending ourselves into oblivion for decades. For generations. I’ve been expecting the house of cards to fall for quite a while, and I’ve been surprised at how long we’ve avoided the day of reckoning. The bigger the house grows, the messier will be the resulting rubble. And we peons are helpless to change that.

I’m not a big fan of this graph if I’m reading it correctly.

If the “Employment taxes” it references are FICA and Medicare, then it is putting those programs in with receipts for all government spending, which is not helpful given that they are separate from an expenditure perspective. Indeed, individual and corporate income taxes do nothing, and should do nothing, to support the programs that are indicated by the employment taxes.

A better chart would be to exclude employment taxes. At that point, I think we’d see that, while declining, the overall contribution of corporate taxes to year-to-year funding of the federal government is much more noticeable.

There was a time when they weren’t called taxes.

Essentially the government has usurped those payments into general revenue (whether or not they actually call them that) and unabashedly call them taxes now.

And given the trajectory of that line, it won’t be long before that’s the primary revenue source for the fedgov.

Of course all taxation decisions are basically arbitrary. I’m sick of massive corporations hiring teams of lawyers to thwart legislation. It’s a legal arms race that the government won’t win given the influence corporations can have on legislation. In any event, it makes more sense to me to make all income actually count as income, earned and unearned. No corporate tax rate means you can tax dividends and capital gains higher without running into issues with double taxation.
