Hmmm, a problem with your analysis. Saying we have 12 years to fix a problem does not necessitate the earth ending in 12 years. It merely means we have an unfixable problem in 12 years.

This sort of is of the vein where some conservatives thought that Obama thought there were 57 states. It’s kind of this silly way of interpreting language to fit their narrative. In this case, the idea that a man of Obama’s education and intellect would not know there were 50 states is fairly ludicrous. Judicious use of Occam’s Razor need be applied.
