It’s not just one thing that I’m talking about. The current higher education system (high school + college) simply takes too long, costs too much and offers little in the way of practical value for many students. I can state unequivocally as someone who taught in a high school for almost two decades that most students get little to nothing from most of the coursework they take.
Most students leave high school with not much more knowledge when they started. The system does understand and appreciate the reality that retention is extremely minimal for most people.
Most students do not leave with enhanced critical thinking skills after eight years of classes either. A very small segment of the population has genuinely high level critical thinking skills no matter how many classes one requires they sit through.
It’s a woefully ineffective system which doesn’t have a clearly defined and or practical goal. The best thing to do is to reform the system to be more practical and streamlined.
