Anyone else seeing this trend in their states? (older workers in minimum wage jobs)

I’ve noticed this more frequently in my part of NJ. Anyone else?

Some of my best employees are retirees. They’re working because they’re bored and want to work…not because they have to work. Their work ethic is excellent. They also often bring their career expertise with them, that I sometimes get to tap into…at little to no extra charge. :+1:

One of my delivery drivers is in his 60s. Retired navy; served on the USS Enterprise back in the 80s. Then worked at a factory for a long time and retired there.

He only works now because his wife doesn’t let him use his retirement money for playing the lottery and going to the casino lol. It’s all just gambling money.

I guess the question is how many are doing it out of necessity?

It really depends on if they had a good retirement plan.

There’s certainly more than one who didn’t plan for retirement very well.

modern schools have produced a generation of great workers…

wait…

That’s really hard to tell. At the Shoprite, Stop N Shop, Lowes, what used to be kids at the register, are people older than me. I’m guessing it’s more opportunistic than it is necessity. As you well know, here in NJ most jobs start at 15 an hour or more. They probably see it as an easy way to make extra cash.

Look to states that use the federal minimum wage. If it’s happening there, that’s probably out of necessity.

That is great to hear. Thank you and good for them.

To me- it’s the very saddest story when people reach retirement age- and then realize they don’t have the means to retire. I have known several people who had this happen.

Retirement plan is the key. TBH- I worked as a teacher for 20 years (second career) and as a nurse for 10 before that-with kids in between- and if I had to retire on that pension and SS- I’d be sad. Luckily my spouse and I have saved and invested like crazy. I LOVE not working. I love traveling. I love sleeping late. Taking care of my grandchildren - it’s what we deserve.

And the stores probably know they’re reliable workers. My local Shop Rite is a mix of kids and grown ups. But I have to say- the grownups don’t look too happy to be there.

I assume it’s a bit of both. It’s definitely more common than years ago.

I can honestly say, my Shoprite and Stop and shop have older cashiers. Even the Lowes by me. This is a new thing. I moved to where I live right now in the late 90s. It was always young kids exclusively. It has changed.

…and so have many of the young kids.
