You make zero sense, phone lines represent physical infrastructure that could be managed by smaller local companies on a regional basis, and was a utility that was universally used. There was nothing unique about the infrastructure or services.
Social media has zero relation, it is not physical or universal, and there is no avenue for smaller entities to take their proprietary software. And anyone at any time can develop competition, there are all sorts of new platforms and Facebook itself supplanted Myspace as an example.
