Both times I was robbed the cops caught them within a week. So they do just fine.

And what impact did that have on you? Was the satisfaction of them getting caught worth the robbery in the first place?

By the nature of the job, law enforcement attracts those who like to bully and throw their weight around. They like the feeling of power a badge gives them.

On the flip side they are many many police officers who are dedicated and have a desire to make a real difference in their community.

Law enforcement has to do a better job in ferreting out these bad apples.

Another good reason to go away with Police Unions.

Here is a fine officer who didnt like the guy his 18yo daughter was dating. So he throws him in cuffs, and places him in his squad car. The officer tells the boys mom he is going to search her house. She attempts to call 911 when the officer tells her if she completes the call, she was going to jail. He even passed up on a 911 call of a woman who was being beaten that was coming in over his radio because after all, he needed to teach the boyfriend a lesson. And guess what…The daughter was hiding in the boyfriends car the whole time, but was afraid of her father.

They ended up firing the fine police officer.

I note that Police is capitalized so, although I haven’t read the thread yet, I can only assume this Outside the Beltway thread is about The Police, one of the best bands of the 80’s.

I can’t think of any reasons to hate The Police. Awesome lyrics, catchy rythyms, singable choruses - I’d say only a freaking communist would hate The Police.

Dislike of police was given approval by the previous Administration and that’s why we have a record amount of police officers being murdered on our streets on a regular basis! And NO those that hate law enforcement don’t care how it sounds or who dies, unless of course it’s a perp killed by the police, if it’s visa versa they don’t care.

So tell me, why should you being “Pro police” have any bearing on my feelings/opinions at all? I do not like the police. I am not going to start liking them because you and Altair1013 think they are great. I see them as violaters of our great bill of rights and have no use for them. I am not willing to tolerate them for a little security. Because like Ben Franklin said, “he who would trade liberty for a little security deserves neither.”

I guess when you put it that I see where you’re coming from. No different than KKK members that think all blacks should be swinging from a rope. Or all Muslims are terrorists.

The reality is police slayings went down over the Obama years. You should stop listening to your sources. They are lying to you.

There are good cops.

There are bad cops.

There are mediocre cops.

I don’t lump them all together.

I DO go on the assumption that they are a bad cop until they prove otherwise.

If you must interact with a cop.

1. Be polite.

2. Cooperate fully with their instructions but if it is situation where you suspect that they suspect you of something criminal, offer no information and politely refuse to answer any questions, invoking your 5th Amendment rights when doing so.

3. Never resist, never cop an attitude, never do anything to escalate the situation.

It should rest with the police officer not to escalate, not me.

In the end, you don’t know whether that police officer is good, bad or mediocre. What he should or should not do is not relevant to what YOU or I should do if we end up facing him.

I am NOT going to do anything on my part that will give him an excuse to escalate things and I certainly am not going to do anything that would expose me to resisting arrest charges, either with or without violence.

If he does something wrong, I will document it best as I can and my ATTORNEY will take up any grievances in the legal system. But I will never escalate things myself, and there is absolutely nothing to be gained on my part and everything to lose by doing so.

Of course. In a perfect world, that’s what should be. But we live in an imperfect world.

I will choose to not cop an attitude with a cop - not because I believe it is my responsibility to submit to them, but because I don’t have the time or energy to deal with the possible resulting actions of bad cops.

I usually don’t either but I will if ever they try to escalate a situation beyond what they were originally there for.

Like when we were talking about the Henry Gates situation.

Cops were there to investigate a possible break in.

As soon as it was established Gates lived there, it was time for them to go.

If that’s me…and they don’t leave right after that, I damn well am going to get hostile.

I will not. I will document things and my attorney will handle it in the legal system.

Exactly. My actions in the moment will reflect my desire to remove myself from the situation as quickly and easily as possible.

You are right. Union leadership sucks. It is in direct conflict with good policing.
