What difference does their race or gender make? Shouldn’t justices be evaluated on the content of their judicial character rather than the color of their skin?

Absolutely, but nominating a qualified black woman during a time of racial tension would be seen as a gesture of good will. I think it would be the first time President Trump has tried to reach out to blacks who feel disenfranchised. Might even be good politics.
