I associate the seminal movement with opposition to the Bush baulouts. Whether or not it was actually called the Tea Party at that time, it was the bailouts that started the groundswell, in my opinion.

Dem’s don’t claim the sequester, but they claim Obama was the deficit cutter when in reality the only thing that ever stopped his growing deficits was the loss of the house followed by the sequester.

Prior to that we had trillion plus dollar deficits projected for every year of his presidency and beyond.

That incorrect. In 2010, before dems lost the House, CBO projected the deficit would drop below $1 trillion starting in 2012.

Hey there! You appear to be confusing the terms “debt” and “deficit”.

The post to which you replied stated:

Deficits occur when government spending levels exceed revenue levels. Although you could follow monthly treasury reports, most people use Fiscal Years to round off deficit figures. When Obama took office, the FY2009 deficit was already in excess of one trillion dollars, and in his second term deficits had fallen to under 500 billion dollars, meaning deficits had been cut in half over the course of his presidency.

Debt, on the other hand, is the cumulative total of yearly deficits and surpluses. Over the course of Obama’s time in the white house, the debt increased by around 80%. This figure can be reliably compared to other presidents’s times in office, such as Bush who increased it by more than 100%, or Reagan who increased it by more than 200%.

Keeping this in mind, it would be accurate to characterize Obama’s time in office as one of great deficit reduction, although the debt continued to expand.

Please note the words “also” and “too” in the sentence which you have clipped:

However the post to which ImRightYoureWrong responded was placing responsibility for deficit reduction with the Republican held congress and that the President had nothing to do with it. ImRightYoureWrong is indicating that if the congress gets credit for deficit reduction, then they should also take responsibility for the debt increase.

I would again like to point out the community guidelines for posting and addressing the post rather than the poster. Your posts indicated confusion between the words deficit and debt. It’s understandable considering the post to which you were replying contained both terms. I don’t think anything more needs to be said about the definitions of the terms, or why they both appeared in the post you quoted. I would suggest a reread of the two posts I made.
