Say what you will about NJ (and you probably already have) but there is one thing we have they no other state can touch: America’s Ugliest Fountain.
Light Dispelling Darkness (1937) in Roosevelt Park has got to be the most bizarre piece of public art ever created in this country.
If you’re ever in Middlesex County NJ come and see it. Definitely not worth the trip.

Duchamp’s fountain could be uglier…

Maybe, but the closer you get the more surreal it becomes.

Vaillancourt Plaza Fountain in San Francisco has its detractors. I like it.

Looks like a broken Tetris game.
So I looked this one up online, and it definitely depends on the angle from which it is viewed. In some shots, it’s a big ol’ concrete eyesore.
I do really like the out of the box thinking on the channels, though.
Considering it was completed in 1937, they were a little ahead of the curve with postmodernist “art”.
Wow, that’s awesome (full disclosure, I like brutalist architecture). I live here, but haven’t seen that one… but I don’t get out much.

Apparently! Lol
It’s down on the Embarcadero near the ferry building. Bono infamously spray-painted on it during a free concert in the '80’s
