Can’t decide if I’m breaking my avoidance of theaters for this. It does seem derivative like a force awakens or Jurassic world where the goal is to make a somewhat competent installment to get the series on a new path without actually making a great movie.
I kinda like the whole scenario. The movie is about mankind’s need to overcome the limitations of our bodies to travel on interstellar lengths so there is an alien research facility that Weyland Yutani built but lost to drift out into space.
Saw it in IMAX and, to my great surprise, I loved it. Yeah, it’s got its flaws and the nostalgia bait is laid on a bit too thick, but it’s impeccably well directed and they crafted a wonderful retro tech aesthetic that matches the first two movies seamlessly. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel or match the heights of Alien/Aliens, but it’s entertaining and actually understands what made the first two movies work.
She isn’t a Ripley knock off, which was a smart choice. David Jonsson was superb and will be fielding plenty of offers after this.
