The treaty said no foreign armed forces east the old West German border. The US government assured the Soviets that the pledge included the whole of eastern Europe not just the old East Germany.
Clearly the US has played a game of bait and switch. Once the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact had ended, there was no incentive to keep the earlier commitments.
The only commitment was no foreign troops stationed in old East Germany, and there arenât.
Russia did however have a commitment to keep its troops out of Ukraine in the treaty that removed nuclear weapons from Ukraine.
The secret agreement between Krushchev and Kennedy assured that Russian nuclear missiles would not be based in Cuba never resulted in a ratified treaty. Is Russia free to station nuclear weapons in Cuba?
A core principle that has been repeatedly pushed by Biden and Blinken and that nations are free to develop military alliances with whomever they want. Security concerns of neighboring countries are irrelevant. Is true for Cuba or Venezuela as well as Ukraine?
The US has withdrawn from the ABM treaty and the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. Both were developed and ratified under Reagan. Even a signed and ratified treaty is no guarantee.

Yes, it is amazing to see the leftist German SPD and Green party supporting billions of euros in arms in order to wage a proxy war with Russia. With recent election defeats, the ruling parties are increasing their efforts to ban the largest party who opposes German involvement in the war. Ironically failure to support Azov and its allies has become a pretext for a ban based on âfar-right extremismâ.

No guarantees were made. All the former Warsaw Pact states started begging and lobbying to join NATO as soon as the USSR fell.
Well that and we donât deploy nuclear weapons in the former east Germany. We gave them that promise.
