Airbnb bookings dry up in New York as new short-stay rules are introduced

The new rules are intended to effectively end a free-for-all in which landlords and residents have been renting out their apartments by the week or the night to tourists or others in the city for short stays. Advocates say the practice has driven a rise in demand for housing in already scarce neighbourhoods in the city

Platforms such as Airbnb, VRBO and others are not allowed to process rentals for unregistered hosts – and as of early this week, very few had successfully registered. The city says it has approved just under 300 of the more than 3,800 applications received

These platforms and their hosts have become a plague of locusts feasting on American housing. This policy is appropriately heavy-handed.

Right out of Atlas Shrugged.

Won’t help anything…just destroys.

From the NY regulation: “Hosts must also commit to being physically present in the home for the duration of the rental”

Huh? I don’t want someone else living with me in the accommodations I have rented!

To me, this is like the restrictions on Uber/Lyft that seek to protect the taxi industry in the city. Government picking winners and losers.

It helps the neighbors. It’s a plight in apartment housing

I’ll never understand how grow ups still reference a book of fairy tales for their political philosophy

I use Airbnb when I travel. I hate staying in a hotel.

I also use Airbnb when I take members of my company to conferences. I rent a house with enough room for eight to stay. Beats the hell out of the cost of hotel rooms.

I use Vrbo but regardless there is nothing wrong with the actual business model. It’s the abuse by the realtors and bad renters and the issue that have arisen in several cities. NYC isn’t the first to crack down like this. Miami started going after Airbnb years ago. For obvious reasons.

Then why would NYC make fairy tale their policy?

It is just stupid. Wasted housing stock and discourages tourism.

It’s not a fairy tale. Miami did this too though differently. It’s a problem with realtors and bad renters and the neighbors who suffer as a result. The issue is apartment buildings not houses. But even houses can be problematic as in nyc there is little space between them

You should look into it rather than declaring it stupid.

This is a perfect example of how Democrats can pass whatever the hell the Good Idea Fairy tells them, and their lap(D)ogs will just automatically support it, full fever. :man_shrugging:

I agree. There is one across the waterway from me and renters blast music. They have no idea how much sound carries across water.

If people would be respectful of neighbors, there wouldn’t be so many issues. When I rent an Airbnb, I make sure we are quiet and leave the place clean. I even buy a small gift to leave for the host, lol.

Broad brushing an industry to address acts of disturbing the peace isn’t correcting the issues.

The owners will find other ways to rent out and this Airbnb will go the way of myspace.

Right that’s the issue. The one size fits all. I agree there

Oh, I completely agree. Clearly, I have nothing against renting out an Airbnb as I use them all of the time.

I’d think having something written into the contract fining people for noise or disturbance would go a long way against making these rentals as much of an issue as it is.

That is why I likened it to Atlas Shrugged.

Taking a sledge hammer to an egg with legal policy.

Ayn Rand creates dozens of similar fictional lame brained laws that halt the machinery of productivity and joy in that book.

So NOW what do they do?

Another law.

It isn’t Atlas Shrugged.

It was already illegal to have the types of short term rentals that AirBNB facilitate.

This just made an enforcement mechanism for those laws.

I’m sure high price hotels/motels are driving force behind ending Airbnb.

That and housing advocates.

They are enforcing the laws already on the books.

This change is simply a mechanism to bring compliance.

Other words special interest is working to screw over people.

Or… enforce the law that is already on the books.
