I did not watch the State of the Union nor the Republican response. I have not watched either for many years.
I can get the “Cliff Notes” version very easily.
Presidents Washington and Adams made their address in person. Starting with his first address in 1801, President Jefferson sent his address to the Senate and House by messenger and each body’s respective reading clerk read it into the record. That practice continued until President Taft’s final address in 1912.
In 1913, President Wilson began the ridiculous dog and pony show we know today.
President Jefferson rightly derided an in person address as monarchial and similar to the King’s Speech from the Throne.
The Constitution requires only that the President provide information on the State of the Union.
The next President should decline to address Congress in person and should resume the Jeffersonian practice of sending his address by message.
