A New 'Golden' Opportunity for Liberals

Rampant wildfires because of mismanagement of land, high crime rate, earthquakes. You don’t have to be an actuary to figure this out.

When I was getting ready to renew with USAA, the price jumped dramatically even though I had no accidents or tickets, and when I called they told me prices had gone up because of uninsured drivers in states like Florida. I was told car insurance is not mandatory, except when registering a vehicle in Florida. Is that true?

It’s not a complex price control scheme it’s a simple price control scheme.

Anyway there is a reason those are always abandoned in the long term.
(Nixon’s gas price controls, NYC rent control, etc.)
They always fail in the long term.

We are witnessing the failure of California’s price fixing scheme.

NYC rent control was not abandoned as a failure. It was abandoned to force gentrification.

heres a nice list of residential insurance companies doing business in California.

aka thread ender.

Also, circumstances may have changed since this data call was conducted. Some insurers may not be accepting new business as a result of recent changes in their underwriting guidelines that are not reflected here

I’ve had domiciles in PA, MD and FL. In all three you can’t register or re-register a vehicle without proof of insurance. That said, do people drive without insurance? Of course. Do we, those who perhaps “play by the rules” get assessed for the millions in claims associated with uninsured vehicles? Right again. In Florida registrations are one year or two (optional). Auto coverage is renewed every six months. See the game? A vehicle could be registered and insured for six months and on the roads for 18 months uninsured. Crazy considering it’s against the law to do so.

In my book, car insurance (the mandatory part) is to protect the guy you hit. Government doesn’t require you to carry collision or comprehensive (which protects YOUR car). It requires you to have liability, which is for the other guy.

Now, your car-loan lender could require you to have comprehensive and collision. That protects the asset on which they have lent the money.

I do not begrudge such requirements at all.

Likewise, if you own your house outright, nobody is going to require you to carry homeowners insurance. But if you have a loan on the house, the lender is certainly within rights to require you to carry insurance, and would be foolish not to require it.

It’s amazing how many Floridians do not have Home Owners insurance.

Here, you are only requires to have liability, but of course if you have a lien holder of course you will be required to have comp etc. to protect their investment.

Just recently the state decided you have to have insurance on any registered vehicle. Sounds great and “proper” right? Problem is, thise of us who live in the northern part of the state with huge snowfall etc. will drive what we call our summer vehicle most of the time, but come winter switch to 4-wheel drives etc to get to our destinations. Not everyone but a very high portion switch out vehicles based on seasons etc. It used to be easy to go in and switch your insurance around and take one vehicle off a policy and add a different one. This wasn’t just for winter either. Summer farms and specialty vehicles would sometimes do this also when you were only driving a certain vehicle for maybe 3 months out of the year. Now, you have to pay insurance on all your vehicles all year round even when they sit for 9 months put of the year and never move. Of course, down south where the brain trust politicians decide they don’t have this issue. There is a reason the northern part of the state loathes the southern part of the state.

Would it be cheaper to voluntarily suspend the registration. I mean that’s a lot of work for switching cars. I am not defending the reg (though i understand its necessity) just wondering out loud.

Thanks for the insider information. Yeah that sucks, sorry.

I know it isn’t exactly on topic, but these two are definitely progressives…

Typical response at being caught and in possession with incriminating physical evidence.
“No it’s not”, “It’s not mine”, “ It was in this car I stole”.
Defense in court will be entertaining. “It wasn’t drugs it says so on the bag”
