And if you read the warnings on many of these drugs many have the warning that these drugs may cause homicidal or suicidal thoughts. To watch the adolescent closely for changes in mood or agitation. Most people just put their kids on meds and don’t read the side effect sheet from the pharmacy.

I think that psychiatry places too much of an emphasis on medication and not enough on actual therapy. Plus…meds are being prescribed by Primary Care Physicians who really don’t have a whole lot of psychiatric experience. Psychiatrists don’t spend any time talking to patients about how they feel or how they are feeling on medications…they just have the patient come in…for med management, ask a few questions, bill $200 bucks for 15 minutes and then refill the prescription for another three months.

To me that is as big an issue as any.

The medication caused the problems…like ADD meds…so parents don’t seek treatment.

Parents don’t know how to say no…kids are spoiled brats.

Treatment has to encompass medications, individual therapy and family therapy. A holistic mental health approach.

Medication isn’t always appropriate nor is it usually the best option absent close supervision and monitoring combined with intensive therapy.

Throwing a prescription at them and booting them out the door hasn’t’ proven to be the solution.

For the past few months, 2d Amendment advocates have been blaming lack of mental healthcare for many of the most egregious mass-shooting incidents (although stopping short of actually advocating funding for it).

But now we find that in many cases when perpetrators have actually had substantial mental healthcare visits, the drugs prescribed actually encourages them to commit violence. So lack of mental healthcare isn’t the issue, anymore?

Is there some new cause for this behavior? Some new issue we can blame for the perceived increase in violence? We know its not the guns. And even if it were, we can’t do anything about that.

What’s the new excuse?

Your read on this is bizarre. You are obviously having trouble understanding that it is the failure of the mental health profession and greed of the pharmaceutical industry, not 2nd Amendment advocates, that facilitate the mass murderers?

Coming off of these meds is a real BITCH. They can cause a miriad of medical issues not to mention make underlying psychiatric medications much much worse than they were originally. They are nothing to ■■■■ with. It doesn’t surprise me as to the report you cited. NOT IN THE LEAST. One very important aspect of today’s anti-depressants is the little know issue of Serotonin Syndrome. Most of these meds are SSRI medications. They are serotonin re uptake inhibitor…which means that it blocks the body’s normal process for getting rid of Serotonin. Too much Serotonin causes all kinds of hallucinegenic issue varying from dreams to all out violent and often very real and scary hallucinations. I would venture to guess that this may be some of what you see with kids on Anti-Depressants. But the medical field says very little about it. There are very minor warnings about these medications causing this. Couple them with other medications like seizure meds or pain med…and you get hallucination cocktail that will leave an otherwise normal individual quaking in their shoes.

Nah…your just being obtuse. It isn’t a lack of mental health care we are talking about, it is a lack of anykind of real guidance about the use of medications and the ongoing proper mental health care. It is a very real issue. If you read my posts carefully, I am talking about the fact that we so often want to just throw a pill at the problem…and not do anything else. I am talking about a lack of holistic approaches to mental health care. I have not once said anything about the 2nd amendment in my statements.

Great piece on 60 minutes last night on opioid epidemic and how the guys who used to be in charge of investigating the drug companies at the DEA eventually left the DEA to Lobby for the drug companies and teach the drug companies how to get around the DEA investigations…Hell one former DEA guy turned lobbiest and wrote the current legislation that OBAMA signed that takes away a great deal of DEA authority to stop the drug companies from doing what they have been doing.

Well, I both agree and disagree about the electronics. IMHO, in an otherwise mentally healthy person, the games don’t do a thing. In the mentally ill, I’m not so sure. Most of the school shooters have a history of playing first person shooter video games to an obsessive level.

It started way before Reagan. It started when Carter was a governor of Georgia. My dad was a psychiatrist at state mental hospitals in GA and AL for most of his career. The defunding began in the early 1970s, not in the early 1980s. (Yes, Reagan may have done that in CA, but not nationally. )

Yeah, that was a good piece. But the focus was primarily on the drug distributors, not the manufacturers. Yes, manurfactuers misrepresented (lied) about the safety of the drugs, but it is the distributors who failed to report the hugely disproportionate consumption of the drugs and it was doctors who did not do their homework when addiction problems first began to arise that perpetuated the crisis. And of course the politicians hands are as dirty on this issue as they have ever been. In a just world, the whole lot of them would be put away for a very long time.

Drugs are never the best answer without supervision and counseling. The bigger problem is over prescribing and a lack of counseling to go with the drugs or instead of them.

Most psychiatric/psychological patients are not seriously ill they just need someone to listen to them and point them in the right direction.

The severely mentally ill need to be in inpatient treatment for their welfare and ours.
