Time to rethink our school system…don’t you think?

I’ve said that for years.

Our school model is based on an antiquated agrarian society (9-10 month school year, with teacher contract of 180-200 days).

I’d tear it down and start from scratch.
** Schools would have three semesters per year with 2-3 week breaks between semesters.
** Teachers would be moved from 9-10 month contracts to 12 month contracts and become eligible to accrue vacation time like other professional EEs.
** Between semesters teachers would work on remediation/tutoring with students having problems, curriculum development, Professional Development or plan to use vacation time.
** Moving teachers from 9 or 10 month contracts to 12 month contracts would mean a pay increase of about 20-25%.

But really, building a new school model is a topic for it’s own thread.

Schools here are open. They sanatize the classrooms at the end of the day. They have plastic shields between groups of desks. The district (at least where I am) has purchased masks for teachers, aids, office staff, sanitation workers, and students who need them. When it was remote – the school district bought laptops for all the students to use at home. The teachers were in their classrooms via video. They also scheduled one on one for students who needed it. First month they were shut down, they still made lunches and delivered them via bus to most students. So here, lighting and heating took place, food was still being served, and there was still ongoing maintenence (you have to keep doing that regardless of if students are in the building or not).

Same here. School costs are exorbitant right now. And they are doing the best they can to provide some kind of education.

You don’t need to heat empty schools 70 degrees, having all lights on when it’s empty. Buses aren’t running, food lunches aren’t being made.

But since your state keeps the schools open…then help those states. Not the ones that closed to public.

Our school system is hybrid with approximately 1/3 of the students in the buildings on any given day. The kids on the free lunch get food either in school or delivered home. Every student was given a lap top. Buses are running. The heat is on.

I’m not sure how you can definite link overdressed to lockdowns. Certainly the over all stress of the times including lock downs…but just that one aspect…not sure you can do that.

And btw regardless of government mandates plenty of businesses stopped operating. Airlines for example. Traffic is down an imprecise red amount yet there is no restrictions placed on them by the government.
