“They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them” (Romans 1:29-32 NIV).
- Wickedness- The injustice of a judge, the unrighteous condition of a person’s heart and life, or a deed violating law and justice which is an act of unrighteousness
- Evil- Evil purposes and desires, depravity, iniquity, wickedness, and malice
- Greed- The covetous desire for wealth or material gain; avarice
- Depravity- Malignity, malice, ill-will, desire to injure, wickedness that is not ashamed to break laws, evil, trouble
- Envy- Ill-will prompted by jealousy and/or spite
- Murder- The killing of another human being under conditions specifically covered in law. In the U.S., special statutory definitions include murder committed with malice aforethought, characterized by deliberation or premeditation or occurring during the commission of another serious crime, as robbery or arson (first-degree murder), and murder by intent but without deliberation or premeditation (second-degree murder). Jesus said hatred without righteous cause is murder in the heart (Matthew 5:21-22).
- Strife- Contention, wrangling
- Deceit- Craft, guile
- Malice- Bad character, depravity of heart and life, malignant subtlety, malicious craftiness
- Gossip- Whispering secret slander or detraction
- Slander- Defaming, evil speaking
- God-hating- Exceptional lack of reverence and proper respect toward or wicked hatefulness for the God of the Bible
- Insolence- Heaping insulting language or shameful acts of wrong upon others because of being uplifted with pride
- Arrogance- Showing one’s self above others, overtopping, conspicuous above others, pre-eminent, an overweening estimate of one’s means or merits, despising others or even treating them with contempt, haughty
- Boastfulness- Empty pretending
- Inventing ways of doing evil- Contriving thoughts, feelings, or actions of a bad, base, wrong, troublesome, injurious, pernicious, destructive, baneful, wicked nature other than what should be
- Disobedience to parents- Inflexible, impersuadable, non-compliant, stubborn, willful disobedience toward parents
- Without understanding- Being unintelligent; stupid
- No fidelity- Compromising, covenant-breaking, faithless
- No mercy- No compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one’s power to punish or harm
- No love- Without natural affection, inhuman, unsociable
- Knowing God’s righteous decree but continuing in these sins- Thorough and accurate recognition and understanding by sight, hearing or signs the established ordinances, righteous acts, and deeds of God as well as the unfavorable sentence of death and eternal condemnation in Hell for violating His established ordinances but violating them anyway.
- Approval of those who practice these sins- Public pleased agreement, consent, or even applauding those who exercise their free will to perpetrate public violations of the established ordiances of God
