I thought it was mainly disbanded after ww 2 and that’s why we have bases there. They cal it self defense forces.

We will never agree on this one! It’s not really an army if you can’t go attack people who attacked you outside your own country. If your country is banned from deploying soldiers on foreign soil is it really an army?

It’s self defense forces in name only.
If they regained the willpower, they’d be a formidable fight force. That’s the only thing they’re lacking. The mass will to go on the offensive.
But their training is good, their tech is excellent (the US and Japan have an extensive military sharing program so they mostly use indigenous versions of our own weapons), and they have a fairly large manpower pool volunteering for JSDF service despite some stigma against a standing military among the left leaning political class and much of the urban civilian population.
If push came to shove, the JSDF would be able to fight and fight well. They’ve got all the building blocks there.
